Friends of Robbins Library Presents: Welcome to the Graveyard
December 2 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Join us for a virtual tour of Arlington’s cemeteries. When not creating decorative artwork using the beautiful and primitive images carved on old New England gravestones, the Gravestone Girls give lectures and tours on cemetery art, history and symbolism as well as teach gravestone rubbing classes. From the colonial New England burial grounds of the 1600s & 1700s, through the nation-wide rural cemetery movement of the 19th century and into 21st century locations, the program examines why we have cemeteries and gravestones, why they look like they do and how styles and art have evolved over almost 400 years. The show has been created using many photographs of Arlington’s cemeteries and gravestones to present as much local content as possible! The Girls aim to entertain and educate on the historical perspective of old cemeteries by documenting and preserving the beautiful art they contain.
