English NOW!, an Arlington-based group, offers English language learners opportunities to practice their conversation skills, advance their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, and make connections in the community.  Participants in these free conversation groups discuss varied subjects under the supervision of native speakers.

This group meets in the Robbins Library downstairs Community Room every Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Zoom conversation groups are also available. Email englishnowArlington@gmail.com for more information.


MassLINKS is the new statewide adult education virtual academy. It offers both General Educational Development (GED) and High School Equivalency Test (HiSet) courses, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL/ESL) courses, all for adults in need. Both programs are completely FREE!

The GED/HiSet courses will help you improve your reading, writing, and math skills. Preparation classes are FREE and are offered to students in need of their high school credentials.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL/ESL) courses are for students learning to speak, read and write English. Choose from beginner, intermediate, and advanced level courses.

Regardless of your comfort level with computers, the online learning staff is here to help you! MassLINKS staff will work with you to ensure you have access to the necessary technology.

TEAS Test Prep for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs)

Are you a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) whose first language is not English? Is your goal to enroll in nursing school or another health-related program? This 12 week, 36-hour course offered by Lamplight Women’s Literacy Center will prepare CNAs for the Reading and English Language Usage portions of the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills.) The TEAS is an admissions requirement for nursing programs that can be a barrier to nonnative English-speaking applicants. Tuition is free. Co-sponsored by Lamplight Literacy.  Register online at www.lamplightliteracy.org.

Classes will be held in the Robbins Library fourth floor Conference Room on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., starting Monday, October 17th through Monday, January 23rd, with some exceptions for holidays.

English at Large provides free, accessible, language services to adult immigrants in 24 communities across Greater Boston. They offer:

  • one-to-one tutoring
  • conversation groups
  • Career Access Lab (CAL)
  • beginner English classes
  • caregiver and workplace English programs
  • summer book groups
  • online English practice lessons

All services are delivered by volunteers, trained and supported by English At Large staff.
